Hung Out, by John Derris is a great opener that Don Alan used for many years and was a development of the classic cigar from purse trick.

Effect

The magician announces that a purse has been found and enquires if the owner is in the audience He then goes on and opens the purse and shoes and describes the contents – a twenty pound note, some loose change, a bunch of keys, and a packet of three – polo mints!

You can have a lot of fun with your patter and can use this trick to build an immediate rapport with your audience.

After a pause the magician then says “Oh yes – and a coat hanger!” On saying this he then pulls out a solid, wooden 13″ coat hanger and drops it on the table to prove its solidity!

It was a stunning opener that caught everyone and was used on many occasions when Don Alan appeared on network chat shows in the USA to the delight and surprise of Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett and other chat show hosts.
