Been away on French leave
Posted on May 17th, 2008 by John
NOT ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE for the past few days as have been away in France with the Vaudeville Golfing Society playing at Le Touquet and Hardelot. The VGS is a society made up of show business folk – comedians, musicians, composers, managers, technicians, agents and yes magician’s who meet socially and play golf at three affiliated golf clubs in London and have many competitions and social events during the year including their famed stag night every November at The Royal Lancaster. And all at a very attractive membership fee.
They’ve been going for 76 years since the great days of past stars of variety- Bud Flanagan, Ted Ray, Donald Peers, Jewel and Warris, Dickie Henderson, Harry Secombe, Cardew Robinson and other names that many older performers may remember. Today we have many other stars who are members – Bruce Forsyth, Roger de Courcey, Jess Conrad, Tom O’Connor as well as many others who have had a career in show business.
If you’re in the entertainment industry and would like to know more about one of Britain’s oldest show business golfing societies, give the secretary Stan Ribton a ring 01923 825758, mention this blog and you could be eligible to join. France was great. Superb weather, great golf, great food and show biz stories by the dozen. And yes I did do some table magic and mentalist Chris Hare did some of his great memory stunts. Why not come and join us.
