Suspense
Suspense, by John Derris is the classic Anti-Gravity Glasses trick brought up to date for close-up performance.
I’ve always loved the effect of Anti-Gravity Glasses which is so visual that it really does appear to be magical. Harry Stanley sold a very good stage version with a sheet of plastic with silks placed inside the glasses which were pulled away one at a time.
I’d always wanted to perform the effect close-up but none of the usual gimmicks that clipped onto a piece of perspex or hidden inside a handkerchief were clean enough to do table to table.
My dream was to be able to take out a wallet from my pocket and place two tumblers on it and turn the whole thing upside down. Simple, clean, portable and effective at extreme close up.
So I devised a small, engineered gimmick that could be hidden inside a banknote that was logical to have inside the wallet. After several modifications I came up with a routine that has served me very well and fulfils all my criteria. I use this routine in almost all my table magic performances.
Effect
The magician pulls a wallet from his jacket and opens it to reveal a number of banknotes which can be shown quite freely. The banknotes are laid in a haphazard fashion on the wallet and two empty tumblers are displayed.
These are placed one at a time on top of the wallet held in the hand and the whole is turned upside down! The spectator can look as closely as he wishes but there is nothing to explain this incredible feat that defies the law of gravity. The spectator can remove the glasses and the magician freely shows the banknotes and the wallet which is placed back in his jacket pocket ready for the next performance which can be done immediately.
