The Magnetized Cards

The Magnetized Cards is the trick that made Nate Leipzig famous.

I first saw Dai Vernon perform this effect nearly fifty years ago and since that time I have only come across one other magician who does it. It’s a stunning visual trick and Vernon described the gimmick that Nate Leipzig had made and I was so intrigued that I made one up and have used it for many years. It looks absolutely impossible.

Effect

The magician shuffles a pack of cards and the spectator is invited to cut a small packet. The magician places the packet on his open palm and shows the cards one at a time which are then placed just under the packet forming a rosette.

This continues until a cluster of cards is balanced on the magician’s hand. He then turns his palm over and the cards cling as if magnetized. Each card can be pulled away from the hand individually, shown and replaced and yet it still clings. Finally the spectator places his two hands under the cards and on a given signal all the cards drop mysteriously into his waiting palms. The magician shows his two open hands to demonstrate no glue, no wires, no threads and no gimmicks to explain this classic mystery.

Nate Leipzig made his name using this effect for years that was a closely guarded secret and only passed it on later in his life.
